Three takeaways from the Bears’ 26-14 victory over the Saints, their fourth in a row

It wasn’t memorable or impressive, but the Bears pulled out a 26-14 victory over the Saints to improve to 4-2, matching where they stood at this point last season.

Here’s what went right and wrong in the win:

Defense disrupts

While there still are concerns about the defense overall, the Bears had four takeaways: Montez Sweat’s strip-sack and interceptions by Kevin Byard, Tremaine Edmunds and Nahshon Wright.

Swift solid

D’Andre Swift continued to play like the running back the Bears need and had 124 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. He also got solid backup from rookie Kyle Monangai, who had 81 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.

Wobbly Williams

Quarterback Caleb Williams’ performance, including a season-worst 61.7 passer rating and season-low 172 yards, simply won’t be good enough against decent teams. The Bears need him to be a major factor to keep winning.

Kicking a sad-sack opponent to the curb is no great achievement, but it was how the Bears did it — winning a fourth game in a row for the first time since 2018 — that counted.
It was only the third time in Swift’s career that he’d run for more than 100 yards in consecutive games.
While all wins are worth celebrating, this didn’t change the overall assessment. Quarterback Caleb Williams said it’s “insane” that the Bears are 4-2 given how much growth has yet to happen, and Ben Johnson maintained his approach of cherishing the victory but being “a truth-teller.”
