Thunderstorm-fueled ground delay at DIA derails hundreds of flights

Hundreds of flights headed in and out of Denver International Airport on Monday were delayed amid afternoon thunderstorms.

As of 3 p.m. Monday, a ground delay was in effect at DIA, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The ground delay is scheduled through at least 8 p.m. Monday, with the longest delays expected after 4 p.m., FAA officials said. Flights were being delayed by an average of 54 minutes at 3 p.m.

At that time, 387 flights had been delayed at DIA and 19 had been canceled, according to flight tracking data from FlightAware.

Southwest delayed 166 flights on Monday, followed by 100 from United, 62 from SkyWest, 18 from American Airlines and 15 from Frontier. Eleven additional airlines delayed between one and six flights.

Air Canada canceled 12 flights at DIA on Monday, 100% of its Denver schedule. It’s unclear if those cancellations are linked to the thunderstorms or the ongoing flight attendant strikes.

The remaining flight cancellations include four United flights, two Frontier flights and one American Airlines flight, according to FlightAware.
