GILROY — A man shot and killed a family member before fatally shooting himself Sunday in unincorporated Gilroy, according to authorities
The episode happened just before 3:30 p.m. Sunday at a residence on Sheldon Avenue, Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Brooks Jarosz said in a news release.
When deputies arrived at the scene, witnesses told them a family member had shot a 68-year-old man and then barricaded himself inside the garage, according to Jarosz.
Deputies entered the home and discovered the victim had been fatally shot, Jarosz said.
Nearby homes were evacuated as deputies tried to reach the suspect, according to Jarosz.
“Over the course of more than eight hours, numerous announcements and phone calls were made in the hopes of persuading the suspect to surrender,” Jarosz said in the release.
Deputies used a drone to find the suspect inside the garage with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Jarosz.
The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office will release the identities of the victim and the suspect after they are confirmed and their next of kin is notified.
Detectives with the sheriff’s office’s Investigative Services Division have taken over the crime scene, Jarosz said, adding that “this investigation remains active and ongoing.”
