Two people were killed Monday when the small plane they were in crashed shortly after taking off from the Montrose Regional Airport on the Western Slope, according to the Montrose County Sheriff’s Office.
The single-engine plane took off from the airport around 10:20 a.m. and headed north before it crashed near the intersection of the 6300 Road and E. Juniper Road in Montrose, about two miles from the airport, sheriff spokesman Dave Farley said.
“It came over, banked, hit a mound and then skidded across the road — it’s a dirt road on private property — and then it started on fire,” Farley said.
The two people inside the plane, both males, were killed, he said. He did not know the ages of the victims.
Farley noted the airport was visible from the crash site. He said investigators don’t yet know the cause of the crash and that the Federal Aviation Administration would investigate.
