OAKLAND — Two men were fatally shot two hours apart in different areas of the city Thursday and an arrest was made in one of the killings, authorities said.
The two killings do not appear to be related, authorities said.
The first shooting, that claimed the life of a 47-year-old Berkeley resident, happened about 11:37 a.m. Thursday in the 2700 block of East 20th Street in East Oakland and prompted the activation of a gunshot detection alert system, police said.
The man, whose name has not been released, was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced deceased at 2:54 p.m., police said.
Investigators have not yet released a motive for the killing nor have they said why they believe the man was in Oakland. No arrests have been announced and no suspect information has been released.
About 1:37 p.m. another gunshot detection system alert sent officers to the 4500 block of Market Street in North Oakland where they found a 30-year-old man wounded. The man, whose identity police are trying to confirm, died at the scene.
A man, whose name has not yet been released, was later arrested by police as a suspect in the killing. Police have not yet provided a motive for the shooting or said if the man killed and the man arrested knew each other.
The killings are the first and second homicides of the year investigated by Oakland police. Last year at this time police also investigated two homicides in the city.
Anyone with information about the killings may contact investigators at 510-238-3821 or 510-238-7950. Anyone with video or other images that might assist in the investigations may email them to cidvideo@oaklandca.gov.
