Steamboat Resort will open this weekend as scheduled with two trails in operation, but two Colorado resorts have had to postpone tentative openings scheduled this week due to lack of snow.
Purgatory and Powderhorn haven’t had enough cold weather to produce the amount of manmade snow needed to open their slopes.
“Despite the massive efforts of our mountain operations team, Mother Nature hasn’t cooperated,” a notice on the Purgatory website says. “We simply haven’t received enough snow or the sustained cold temperatures needed for adequate snowmaking to open. Opening plans are being updated based on conditions. New projected date coming after this weekend.”
Beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Steamboat will be operating the Wild Blue Gondola and Sunshine chairlift, serving two trails on the upper mountain, High Noon and Spike. To get off the upper mountain, skiers will have to download via the gondola.
“The forecast is changing in our favor, with colder temperatures and natural snow on the way,” according to Steamboat spokeswoman Juliana Troccoli. “We will continue to work with Mother Nature to open more terrain as conditions allow.”
