According to the forecasters, a branch of a jet stream has been approaching the UK from the west of the Atlantic since Thursday.

It is said the jet stream will end up in a “cold and warm front” combo – bringing continuous rain for the time.

Experts forecast that “beefy shower clouds” will bring thunderstorms & torrential downpours on Friday.

Met Office Meteorologist Aidan McGovern said: “A change in the weather patterns is on the way but I suspect it will be a change which won’t be widely popular.

“To the west of the Atlantic, there’s a branch of a jet stream which over the next 24 hours is going to pick up an area of low pressure and send it towards the UK. It will culminate in a cold front warm front combo bringing persistent rain for a time.

“On Friday we have that low pressure in place over the top of the UK jet stream once again to the south of the UK. That means we have an upper level low and a surface area of low pressure coincident with each other .

The surface low, the upper low and a strong sun at this time of year, are all the ingredients for rapidly rising air currents, beefy shower clouds and torrential downpours – even some thunderstorms on Friday.”

He revealed the UK could be hit with frequent showers this week, but temperatures are set to change over the next few days.

On Thursday, forecasters revealed brisk winds will drive a wall of rain across the UK.

The rain blast will set off a salvo of thundery showers lasting until Saturday.

Met Office spokesman told The Sun: “There is an area of low pressure to the west of the UK that will produce a front.

“It will cross the UK on Thursday bringing rainfall for most of us, starting in the west in the morning and moving northeastwards.

“Some locations could see 20-40mm of rain, most likely on south-facing hills in southwest Scotland as well as north and south Wales.”

The spokesman added: “It’ll also be windy along western coasts as the front moves through.

“Low pressure then remains in charge of the UK weather through the remainder of the week, with continued spells of showers.”

The Environment Agency has issued 11 amber flood alerts across England.

However, the agency said the general flood risk across the country is very low.

Met Office’s forecast:

Today:
Outbreaks of rain becoming slow moving across northern Scotland and Shetland where winds will also be gusty. Elsewhere after a bright start, showers developing widely, these becoming heavy and perhaps thundery during the afternoon. Remaining on the cool side.

Tonight:
More persistent rain across Shetland is slow to clear north. Showers continue to affect most areas, but are becoming less frequent across parts of Scotland. Chilly under longer clear spells.

Saturday:
After a chilly start for some, Saturday promises a day of sunny spells and showers, these locally heavy, with a continued risk of thunder, Still feeling rather cool.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:
Sunny spells and scattered showers on Sunday and Monday, these locally heavy, but some places staying dry. Tuesday mainly dry for all. Feeling warm in the sunshine with winds easing.

June 18-June 27
It is most probable that initially fine conditions will prevail for most, with more changeable conditions with cloud and some rain being confined to the far north and northwest, temperatures will likely be close to or slightly above average. Although even during this time, a few daytime showers could pop up in the east. However, there is a slight chance of an alternative scenario that initially an area of cloud could edge northwestwards from Europe and bring a few days of thundery rain and fairly hot / humid conditions to the southeast. Into the last week of June, on balance it appears more probable that milder than average conditions will continue, with the wind from the southerly quadrant. During this time rainfall looks quite variable (some places dry others wet).

June 28-July 12
There is little sign for any one type of weather pattern to dominate during this period. As such, typical conditions for the UK are most probable with a mixture of weather types. All areas can expected to see some spells of drier, sunnier weather, but there will also be showers or longer spells of rain at times. Currently the only signals, weak as they are, hint that rain and showers will tend to be more biased towards the north and west, with any more prolonged drier interludes favouring the south. Temperatures are most likely to be close to or slightly above climatological average.
