A plane landed on a runway at Mumbai Airport in India just feet behind another aircraft taking off.

The heart-stopping moment was caught on camera on Saturday.

Footage shows the Air India plane, which was flying to Trivandrum in Kerala taking off as the IndiGo plane, which was arriving from Indore, in Madhya Pradesh touching down.

There are on average around 46 departures and arrivals an hour happening on the single runway.

Air traffic controllers can allow up to two departures and two arrivals in the space of three minutes, though this time can be reduced if the visibility is particularly good.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation, India’s aviation watchdog, and the two airlines are all conducting their own investigations, the MailOnline reports.

Meanwhile, the air traffic controller on duty at the time has been suspended.

An Air India spokesperson told local media: ‘AI657 from Mumbai to Trivandrum was on take-off roll on June 8.

‘The Air India aircraft was cleared by Air Traffic Control to enter the runway and subsequently cleared for take-off.

‘The Air India aircraft continued with the take-off roll in accordance with laid down procedures.

‘An investigation has been initiated by the authorities to find out more about the clearance given to the airlines.’

An IndiGo spokesperson, meanwhile, said: ‘On June 8, IndiGo flight 6E 6053 from Indore was given landing clearance by ATC at Mumbai Airport.

‘The pilot in command continued the approach and landing and followed ATC instructions.’

In December, it was revealed an easyJet flight with nearly 180 people aboard came within metres of crashing into another aircraft as it landed in France.

As the Airbus A320 with 179 people on board landed in Bordeaux-Mérignac from Gatwick Airport, a controller gave the pilot the all clear to land.

But the air traffic control worker had ‘forgotten’ about a second plane waiting to take off on runway 23 and it grazed the plane within 178 feet.
