Bears coach Ben Johnson told his locker room Sunday that it took more than just the team’s stars to pull out Sunday’s 31-28 win against the Steelers.
“It takes a village,” he said. “I’m talking about players, I’m talking about coaches, I’m talking about training staff, I’m talking everyone in this building.”
The Bears, he said, had their depth tested. They played without all three starting linebackers. That’s why the first of the two game balls Johnson handed out Sunday went to linebacker D’Marco Jackson, who made his first career start and called plays in the huddle.
The second went to Montez Sweat, the defensive end who had two sacks, a forced fumble and fumble recovery. Sweat, Johnson said, has been getting hotter and hotter since the team’s Week 5 bye week.
Johnson finished his postgame huddle, as usual, by leading the Bears in his “Good, Better, Best” cheer, something he first learned when he played high school football.
The Bears play the Eagles on Friday in Philadelphia.
