Two people were arrested in connection with a video showing a group of armed men trying to enter an Aurora apartment complex this month, police said Tuesday.
Aurora Police Chief Todd Chamberlain showed the video at a news conference Tuesday afternoon, describing it as “very reminiscent” of a viral video of Venezuelan gang members forcing their way into a different Aurora apartment complex last year.
Police have been called to the apartment complex at 544 Potomac St. at least 12 times since August for suspected shootings, kidnappings and reports of squatters, Chamberlain said.
“I want to let everyone know that we are addressing this actively, effectively and immediately,” Chamberlain said. “We are ahead of this. This is not something we are reacting to, this is something we are proactively addressing with everything that we can possibly do.”
The video recorded June 9 shows a group of suspected gang members repeatedly knocking on an apartment door and pointing their guns at the door while they wait for the residents to answer.
The people living in the apartment were Venezuelan immigrants who had moved in two days before, Chamberlain said, and it appears the group was attempting a scheme similar to what police say Tren de Aragua gang members carried out at the Edge of Lowry apartment complex by forcing residents to pay them rent.
Aurora police arrested Larry Galbreath, 23, on suspicion of felony menacing with a firearm and violating a protection order. Jordan Green, 23, was arrested and released on a summons, and investigators are seeking another arrest warrant in his case.
Police did not say what charges Green initially was arrested on suspicion of, but court records show an arrest warrant was filed Tuesday for two counts of felony menacing and one count of carrying a concealed weapon.
Four others were detained by federal law enforcement, Aurora police said.
“I want this video to be seen … and I want the individuals involved to know that they are going to be going to jail,” Chamberlain said. “They are going to be apprehended, and we are not going to stop until they are.”
