Viewpoint School recognizes athletic achievement at 42nd annual benefit

LOS ANGELES — Calabasas’ Viewpoint School celebrated the spirit of generosity, the school’s mission and its first Athletics Hall of Fame class at its 42nd annual benefit Saturday evening.

“We are an education-based program and teaching life lessons through sport has obviously been a big part of this,” athletic director Josh Frechette said. “Being world-ready is a part of our school mission, and athletics plays an important role in that piece.”

The Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles was the venue for the benefit and the Hall of Fame class was formally introduced in the Ken Block exhibit, which displayed historic rally cars and neon-hued race suits on the outer edge of the room.

Alyssa Hinojosa (soccer), Christian Juzang (basketball), Miye Oni (basketball), Darby Sedighan (volleyball) and Chaney Sheffield (baseball) were all recognized, as well as former athletic director Patrick Moyal.

Moyal led the Viewpoint athletics department for over 30 years and grew the number of teams from six to 150 from fourth grade to the upper school. The Patriots also won 23 CIF championships, three CIF State championships and produced nine CIF All-Academic teams under Moyal.

He walked on to the stage to roaring applause from the audience and the entire group received a standing ovation.

“It was so special because so many people made a point of telling me how much impact I’ve had on their lives,” Moyal said. “And that’s why we do this, to try to make a difference, to try to get people going in the right direction and to guide them as much as possible. And to see the response when I was up on stage, it was very, very touching. It meant the world.”

Moyal said his journey in education has come to an end, but his journeys across the globe are just beginning. As a lifelong traveler, he’d like his second act to involve hosting travel tours and planning travel itineraries.

India has been on of Moyal’s favorite destinations because it was a new, different place that showed him unique perspectives and gave him the opportunity to learn about a new place.

Viewpoint will always remain a home, wherever he chooses to travel.

“We started off as a small school both athletically and all other ways, and we’ve grown so much,” Moyal said. “We’ve grown in stature, we’ve grown in standing, we’ve grown in success, in numbers. We’ve done it all being true to our culture, true to our standards and our beliefs. It’s been an incredible journey.”
