Visiting priest from Mexico accused of sexually assaulting a child ‘many years ago,’ archdiocese says

A priest from Mexico has been accused of sexually assaulting a child during past visits to the city, according to the Archdiocese of Chicago.

Father Ernest Tovar-Trejo, a priest of the Diocese of Tampico, Mexico, has visited Chicago over the years for “short periods in past years,” Chicago’s Archbishop Blase Cupich wrote in a letter to St. José Sánchez Del Rio Parish in Humboldt Park.

Cupuch added that Tovar-Trejo also celebrated mass at Maternity of the Blessed Mother Church without obtaining “proper permission.” The church is a part of St. José Sánchez Del Rio Parish.

Tovar-Trejo allegedly abused the child while visiting Chicago “many years ago.” Cupich did not share a specific date or location of the alleged assault.

Cupich said the Archdiocese is working with the Diocese of Tampico to investigate the allegation. The diocese has since told Cupich that Tovar-Trejo is no longer allowed to minister as a priest.

Tovar-Trejo and the Diocese of Tampico could not immediately be reached for comment.
