Welcome to the Bay Area News Group (Mercury News & East Bay Times) boys Athlete of the Week poll.

For the entire academic year, we will provide a list of candidates who stood out over the previous week and allow you, the reader, to vote for the winner.

This week, we consider performances from Dec. 8-13.

Polls close at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Vote as many times as you’d like until then without using bots or any other artificial methods of voting.

Votes by email and after 5 p.m. Wednesday are not counted.

Winners are announced each Friday online and in the print edition of the Mercury News and East Bay Times sports sections.

Candidates for future Athlete of the Week polls can be nominated at highschools@bayareanewsgroup.com.

We accept nominations until 11 a.m. each Monday.

We also review stats submitted to MaxPreps by coaches/team statisticians.

On to the nominees:

Isaiah Barraza, Valley Christian soccer: The senior scored a goal to help lift Valley Christian to a 3-0 win over Ripon Christian. 

Christian Cermenelli-Johnson, Bishop O’Dowd football: The junior tossed two touchdown passes in O’Dowd’s 37-0 win over Christian-San Diego in the CIF Division 5-AA state championship. 

DeJuan Compton Jr., El Cerrito football: The sophomore threw four touchdown passes and completed 19 of 27 passes for 265 yards to lead El Cerrito to the CIF Division 4-A state championship. 

Brandon Hahn, Granada basketball: The junior scored 26 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked two shots in Granada’s 58-49 win over Woodcreek. Granada began this week 7-2. 

Brayde Kuykendall, California basketball: Santa Clara-bound senior scored 24 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead California to a 57-49 win over Los Gatos in the Los Gatos Lions Club Wildcat Shootout championship game. California is 5-2. 

Rohman Mahmood, Clayton Valley soccer: The senior scored two goals and dished out an assist to lead Clayton Valley to a 3-1 win over Monte Vista. 

Steve Malone, St. Ignatius football: Malone rushed for two touchdowns to lead St. Ignatius to a 42-35 win over Ventura in the CIF 3-AA title game. 

Mateen Mazhar, MacDonald basketball: The senior scored 33 points in MacDonald’s 81-30 win over Hill. MacDonald has opened the season 4-1. 

Luis Partida, Half Moon Bay soccer: The senior scored the go-ahead goal in the Cougars’ 1-0 win over Oceana. Half Moon Bay is 3-2-1. 

Alex Plancarte, Wilcox soccer: The sophomore scored twice and had two assists in games against Palma and Gilroy. Wilcox started this week 2-1-2.
