Step aside, Jason Alexander. The “Seinfeld” universe just got itself another thespian.
Former Broncos quarterback John Elway appeared in a Topps/Omaha Productions spot promoting the 2024 Topps MLS Chrome series released Wednesday.
The general conceit of the ad: What (kinda) happened when the New York Yankees opted to draft Elway in the second round of the 1981 MLB Amateur Draft?
Elway, of course, plays himself. Larry David, as he did throughout his time on “Seinfeld,” does the voice of George Steinbrenner.
The ad begins with Elway talking over the phone with ESPN talking head Stephen A. Smith, who asks the Denver football legend what happened on draft day back in 1981.
The viewer is then taken to a flashback in Steinbrenner’s office … and hilarity ensues. (Although, it helps to be familiar with “Seinfeld” to get all of the Easter eggs that are planted throughout.)
While Smith’s scene was shot at ESPN Studios Seaport Village in New York City, the Steinbrenner office was shot in Denver with David recording his lines in Los Angeles. Omaha Productions, of course, is the entertainment company owned by former Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning. So the Denver connections make a lot of sense.
