Weapons, ammo found in room where toddler was shot last month, police say

Weapons and fired shell casings were recovered inside the bedroom where a 2-year-old was shot in North Lawndale last month, according to a police report obtained by the Sun-Times.

The boy’s mother told police that he had been playing on the floor, and she was lying in bed in a home in the 3800 block of West 14th Street at 4:05 p.m. Dec. 26 when she heard gunshots, according to the report. She grabbed her son and, realizing he had been shot, began applying pressure to his wounds.

However, the child’s grandmother told police the boy’s mother and uncle had been in the kitchen when the boy walked into the other room alone, according to the report. Gunshots rang out shortly after.

The 2-year-old — who was shot in his left ankle, groin and twice in his right leg, according to the report — was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he underwent two surgeries, community activist Andrew Holmes told the Sun-Times a day after the shooting.

Two fired shell casings, two live 9 mm rounds, a gun with an extended magazine, a shotgun with ammunition and a bullet fragment were found in the room where the boy was shot, according to the report.

A 17-year-old was taken into police custody last month but was released without charges, according to the Cook County state’s attorney’s office. No arrests have been made since then, police said.

Holmes said the shooting occurred during a gathering, but other details weren’t available. A woman declined to comment the morning of Dec. 27 when a reporter knocked on the door of the home where the shooting occurred.
