The national day of mourning declared for former President Jimmy Carter includes shutdowns Thursday of some agencies and services.
Carter’s six-day state funeral began Saturday in Georgia and will include two days lying in state at the U.S. Capitol.
President Joe Biden declared a national day of mourning for Thursday, Jan. 9. Among the nationwide closures that day:
All federal offices and agencies. All except employees deemed essential will have a paid day off.
U.S. Postal Service. As a federal agency, the USPS will be closed for the day. The only deliveries will be Priority Mail Express.
Stock markets. There will be no stock trading on the New York Stock Exchange or Nasdaq. Bond trading on the Nasdaq will close early, at 11 a.m. Pacific time.
It is not an official federal holiday, and most banks will remain open.
