White Sox hire Derek Shomon as new hitting coach

The White Sox announced the hirings of Derek Shomon as the new hitting coach, and Sherman Johnson Jr. as the minor-league hitting coordinaotor.

Shomon spent the 2025 season with the Marlins as the assistant hitting coach. Before his stint with the Marlins, Shomon spent four years with the Twins, the last two in which he served as the major-league assistant hitting coach in 2023-24.

He’s the sixth hitting coach since Greg Walker resigned after the 2011 season. It’s not uncomonn for hitting coaches to change often, but given the Sox’ young talent, general manager Chris Getz and manager Will Venable had to ensure that they hired the right person to oversee the development of Kyle Teel, Chase Meidroth and Colson Montgomery.

Shomon is a Glenview native and graduated from Glenbrook South.
