The White Sox keep getting hit hard on the injury front.
Before the rain-delayed game Wednesday against the Tigers, the Sox put second baseman Lenyn Sosa on the 10-day injured list with a strained right hip flexor.
Sosa said the injury happened while running the bases early in the loss to the Tigers on Monday. He said the pain increased as the game progressed.
“Thank God it’s nothing serious,” Sosa said. “I think in a week, week and a half, I’m going to be able to come back.”
Sosa was in the midst of his best stretch with the Sox, batting .274/.291/.383 with 10 doubles, four home runs and 17 RBI.
He has excelled with runners on base, slashing .305/.327/.421.
“My focus was on trying to be more productive with runners on base,” Sosa said.
The Sox certainly will miss the pop Sosa brings to the lineup, combined with his solid range at second. Manager Will Venable said there’s no timetable for his return.
“Sosa was one of those guys that [was] a sneaky performer,” Venable said. “He’s a guy that was in there every day, and [you] look up, he’s among our team leaders in all categories. He’s meant a lot to this team and plays solid defense at second base. And, yeah, we’re going to miss him.”
Welcome back, Elko
The Sox recalled first baseman Tim Elko from Triple-A Charlotte. Elko batted .161 (5-for-31) with three homers in 10 games in his first major-league stint.
“It’s been a journey; that’s part of the game,” Elko said. “I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. You gotta enjoy the ups and downs. Being back here . . . [it] feels great to be with these guys and get ready to win some games.”
Sosa’s injury opened the door for Elko’s return after he and first baseman Andrew Vaughn were sent to the minors May 23. The Sox planned to use Sosa and corner infielder Miguel Vargas at first, but with Elko back, Vargas will return to third, where he has improved considerably from last season.
“It’s an important part of [Vargas’] game, and he does [it] so well,” Venable said. “Now we have the opportunity to do that. We’ll mix back and forth, but you’ll see him at third.”
Roster updates
Right-hander Jonathan Cannon (strained lower back), whom the Sox put on the 15-day IL on Tuesday, still doesn’t have a timeline for his return.
Venable said the team is taking it day by day to fill his spot in the rotation.
• The Sox claimed right-hander Ryan Cusick off waivers from the Tigers and sent him to Charlotte.
Cusick, the 24th overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft, has struggled in the minor leagues, going 10-19 with a 5.20 ERA in 49 starts.
• Right-hander Miguel Castro (torn right patellar tendon) was transferred to the 60-day IL.
He had a 7.50 ERA in six innings.
