White Sox to sign reliever Seranthony Dominguez

It didn’t take much time for the White Sox to use the payroll flexibility they got from trading Luis Robert Jr. to address a need.

A source confirmed Friday that the Sox reached an agreement with right-handed reliever Seranthony Dominguez on a two-year, $20 million contract. He pitched in 12 postseason games for the Blue Jays in 2025 and had a 3.18 ERA in 11⅓ innings.

Dominguez had a 3.16 ERA in a career-high 62⅔ innings last season, allowing 30 runs (22 earned) and 44 hits with a career-high 79 strikeouts and 36 walks.

The Sox needed an overpowering arm in a bullpen that finished in the middle of the pack in strikeout rate. With the Jays and Orioles last season, Dominguez had a 30.3% strikeout rate. He was in the 94th percentile in swing-and-miss rate (33.3%) and fastball velocity (97.7 mph) and in the 79th percentile in hard-hit rate (36.8).

Dominguez has had some control issues, as evidenced by his 13.8% walk rate. But he’s durable — he has pitched at least 50 innings in each of the last four seasons — and is a late-game option for a team that has struggled holding leads.

‘‘I know when you move on from a [player such as] Luis Robert, there’s an assumption that a certain position needs to be filled,’’ general manager Chris Getz said Wednesday. ‘‘But it’s increasing talent on the team to help us win ballgames. That could come in starting pitching, relievers, balancing right-handed vs. left-handed. So we are very open-minded and excited in getting to work in being creative and bringing in that talent.’’

Dominguez will join right-handers Grant Taylor, Jordan Leasure and Mike Vasil in the bullpen.

It has been a busy offseason on the South Side. The Sox signed Japanese slugger Munetaka Murakami to a two-year, $34 million contract and added veterans Anthony Kay and Sean Newcomb to their pitching staff.
