Wildfire on Fort Carson grows to 5,500 acres in El Paso County

A wildfire burning on Fort Carson grew to 5,500 acres Friday and is partially contained.

The Large Impact  fire on the army base’s training ground in El Paso County is 25% contained, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. There is no threat to the public.

The fire grew rapidly from 200 acres on Thursday to several thousand acres overnight due to warm temperatures and high winds, according to Denver7.

Smoke from the blaze has been visible sometimes in Colorado Springs, but fire officials in the city on Wednesday asked people to only call 911 if they saw visible flames.

Fort Carson officials did not immediately return a call Friday morning.
