WNBA to launch ‘Rivals Week’ with Angel Reese’s Sky vs. Caitlin Clark’s Fever

When the WNBA wanted to launch ‘Rivals Week,’ a popular feature of the NBA schedule, a matchup between the Sky and the Fever was the obvious choice to kickstart it. Those teams will face off in a primetime matchup on CBS on Aug. 9 in Indianapolis.

The clear appeal in that matchup is the ongoing rivalry between Sky star Angel Reese and the Fever’s returning Rookie of the Year Caitlin Clark. They had high-profile games last season — the Sky’s two home games against the Fever this season will be at the United Center — in a continuation of their battles when Reese was at LSU and Clark played at Iowa.

‘Rivals Week’ also will include a rematch of the recent WNBA Finals between the Liberty and the Lynx, the Dream’s Brittany Griner face her former team, the Mercury, and a probable showdown between Clark and UConn star Paige Bueckers when the Fever host the Wings. The Wings have the No. 1 pick in the draft Monday and are expected to take Bueckers.

The Fever won 3 of 4 games against the Sky last season. Reese averaged 13.5 points and 13.3 rebounds per game in the series, while Clark averaged 20.5 points, 10 assists and 6.5 rebounds.

The Fever went on to make the playoffs as the No. 6 seed at 20-20. The Sky missed the postseason at 13-27 as Reese missed the final six games with a broken wrist.

Clark won Rookie of the Year nearly unanimously, with the only vote she missed going to Reese.
