A woman was charged with drowning her 1-year-old son in Lake Michigan over the weekend in South Shore, Chicago police announced Monday morning.
Surah Amon, 31, was arrested in the 7000 block of South South Shore Drive Friday night and charged with first-degree murder, police said.
Officers responded to a service call for marine distress and found Amon in the water around 9:45 p.m. Friday, police said. She had cuts on her wrists and was screaming that she killed her son, according to a police report.
The body of her 1-year-old son was recovered by the Chicago Fire Department’ Marine Unit. First responders performed chest compressions, but the boy was unresponsive, the police report said. He was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Amon was taken into custody before being sent to University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was treated for minor injuries, and her mental health was assessed, according to a police report. She told officers she was kicked out of her home by her son’s father, which made her want to take her life, according to the report.
Amon was scheduled to appear in court Monday.
