PALO ALTO — A 52-year-old man was arrested Wednesday in connection with a pair of hit-and-runs in Palo Alto, one of which resulted in the death of an elderly pedestrian, police said.
Around 9:05 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 1200 block of Forest Avenue for a report of a major injury collision, the Palo Alto Police Department said in a news release. Officers arrived to find a woman in her 70s unconscious in the roadway.
The woman was taken to an area hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office will release her identity after it is confirmed and her next of kin is notified.
An initial investigation determined the victim was hit by a vehicle while crossing the street in or near the intersection of Forest and Lincoln avenues, according to police.
The driver did not remain at the scene.
While still at the scene, officers received a report of another hit-and-run that happened around 8:55 p.m. at Channing Avenue and Middlefield Road, police said. No injuries were reported.
Officers determined the same vehicle was involved in both collisions, according to police.
A short time later, officers found the driver and the vehicle in the 1800 block of East Bayshore Road in East Palo Alto.
The driver, identified as East Palo Alto resident Ignacio Estrada, was arrested and booked into Santa Clara County jail on felony charges of vehicular manslaughter, driving under the influence causing injury and hit-and-run causing injury, police said.
