Woman sentenced 10 years for 2023 Lakewood ambush killing

One of the seven people charged in connection with a 2023 ambush killing of a pregnant Lakewood woman will serve 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to assault with a deadly weapon.

Da Janah M. Abrams, 27, pleaded guilty to the charge last October. She was sentenced Friday. She had faced more serious charges, including murder, but those were dismissed as part of the plea deal.

Four others have also pleaded guilty in connection with the slaying of Melanie Massay, 22. Massay was ambushed and shot to death by a group of people near the 1300 block of Zephyr Street in Lakewood on Feb. 28, 2023. Her unborn child also died, and a second person was also shot but survived, according to Lakewood police.

A fifth person has been arraigned and is awaiting trial. The dispositions so far:

  • Jaliyah Burks, 21, surrendered to police in March 2024. She pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in June.
  • ReaAsia Hollins, 21, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in February. She was sentenced to 48 years in prison in May.
  • Isaac Pierrie, 25, was arrested in Aurora in March. He has been charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder and assault.
  • Jrayla Taylor, 24, pleaded guilty in October 2024 to second-degree assault and tampering with physical evidence.
  • Trinity Walker, 20, pleaded guilty to second-degree assault in December.

A seventh person, Monte Hayes, 25, was found not guilty on charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder and assault by a Jefferson County jury in July.
