Open AI and Instacart have joined forces to launch grocery shopping inside of ChatGPT. This means that anyone who relies on the AI chatbot to create a menu can now buy their food in one fell swoop – and allow customers to brainstorm meal ideas, make a grocery list, and check out, all without leaving the chat interface. But the collaboration is not as random as you may think. (Picture: ChatGPT/Instacart)
InstaCart and Open AI have an existing partnership which dates back two years after Instacart launched an in-app AI search tool powered by ChatGPT – which allows shoppers to ask questions about what to make for dinner or how to accommodate dietary restrictions. And former Instacart CEO Fidji Simo, who was already an OpenAI board member, joined the company as the CEO of Applications in May. (Picture: Getty)
Anirban Kundu, Chief Technology Officer at Instacart said: ‘Instacart and ChatGPT are redefining what’s possible in AI-powered shopping. Built on Agentic Commerce Protocol, this experience brings intelligent, real-time support to one of the most essential parts of daily life: getting groceries to feed your family. Together, we’re creating a seamless and secure way for people to turn simple conversations into real-world action, helping customers go from inspiration to a full cart delivered from the store to their door with ease.’ (Picture: Getty)
Nick Turley, VP, Head of ChatGPT said: ‘With the Instacart app directly in ChatGPT, users can go from meal planning to checkout in a single, seamless conversation. It’s another step toward bringing our vision to life—where AI delivers helpful suggestions and connects directly to real-world services, saving people time and effort in their everyday lives.’ (Picture: VCG/VCG via Getty Images)
Patrick Collison, CEO of Stripe, announced the company will be used as the form of checkout. He tweeted on Monday (8 December): ‘Stripe is partnering with @Instacart to enable direct checkout in ChatGPT. This new AI commerce experience is powered by the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) that we launched with @OpenAI a few months ago. Behind the scenes, it uses @Stripe Shared Payment Tokens to securely handle payment credentials. Live today on web! (Mobile soon.)’ (Picture: Jakub Porzycki/NurPhoto via Getty Images)
So, how can users utilise this tool? OpenAI explains that users will be able to ask ChatGPT, ‘Help me shop for apple pie ingredients on Instacart,’ and it will surface the Instacart app. ChatGPT will also suggest the app when users mention food, recipes, or meal ideas. Then, once shoppers connect to the app and sign in with their Instacart account, the app will find the right items and assemble a ready-to-review cart with the help of OpenAI models. From there, users can check out and securely pay directly in the Instacart app within ChatGPT. (Picture: Mateusz Slodkowski/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images)
The project is part of a new retail model known as Agentic commerce, which is the use of AI tools to do shopping research and make purchases on a user’s behalf. This is property for Open AI as its most recent dev day focused on its plan to build apps into ChatGPT – and has plans to work with Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma, Spotify, and Zillow, as well as Target and Intuit.
