Young Big Bear bald eagle reaches milestone in pursuit of first flight

Sunny, one of the two young bald eagles that hatched this spring in a nest overlooking Big Bear Lake, has reached another milestone in preparation for its first flight.

Shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday, May 29, Sunny perched on the “high perch” in the nest — a narrow, Y-shaped branch facing the lake — and as the wind picked up, spread its wings and caught air. Sunny hovered for about 3 seconds before the wind knocked the eaglet back in the nest to join its sibling, Gizmo.

Friends of Big Bear Valley, a nonprofit that maintains two web cams that livestream the goings on in the nest, reported Sunny’s first hovering as a developmental milestone as the two eaglets prepare to fledge, or fly away from the nest.

It’s been three years since an eaglet has successfully fledged from the Big Bear Lake nest. Spirit soared away from the nest on May 31, 2022.
