When Penn State fired James Franklin, it became the top sought-after college football job open. Since then, LSU, Auburn, and Florida have opened up, which, along with some other jobs, will create a crazy coaching cycle.
There have been several names linked to a lot of the openings. Some coaches who are out of coaching have expressed interest in getting back on the sideline. Former LSU National Championship coach Ed Orgeron was rumored to be interested in the Oregon State opening. Jimbo Fisher, who won a National Championship at Florida State and coached at Texas A&M, would also like to be back in.
One name that has been out of coaching for a while is Urban Meyer. His name, however, comes up in rumors, and on Friday, he put to rest whether or not he interviewed for the Penn State opening.
Urban Meyer Denies Interviewing For Penn State Opening
Meyer has been working for Fox and their ‘Big Noon’ pregame show. He joined Colin Cowherd and denied he interviewed for the Nittany Lions‘ opening.
“I certainly did not meet with Penn State about the job,” Meyer said. “And yeah, my phone started blowing up last week. And I’ve got a lot of respect for Penn State. But I have no interest in coaching again. And so, no, of course not.”
Cowherd pressed him some more. The talk show host asked him if anyone had offered him $15 million, would he consider a return?
“Nah, it’s Big Noon, baby,” said Meyer.
Meyer joined the Big Noon kickoff in 2019, but left for a short time to make the jump to the NFL. He coached the Jacksonville Jaguars, but it went badly when he was fired, and he returned to Fox and his pregame show.
Urban Meyer’s Coaching Career Appears to Be Over
Meyer seemed confident in saying that his career appears to be over. Does that mean he won’t return to the sideline? No, but a school would have to blow the 61-year-old away with an offer.
Meyer won three National Championships, two at Florida and one at Ohio State. It makes sense for the schools looking to make a splash to come calling. Penn State AD Pat Kraft isn’t in a rush at Penn State, but it makes you wonder if firing Franklin was the right move to make.
Things appeared to have gone stale with Franklin, but will they be better off with a new coach? Matt Rhule signed an extension to stay at Nebraska, and Marcus Freeman doesn’t sound like he’ll leave Notre Dame. Good luck getting an SEC coach to leave and head to Penn State.
Since Meyer was last in college football in 2018, the landscape of the sport has changed. NIL has become a huge part of the sport and in recruiting. Meyer’s record speaks for itself, going 187-32 between Bowling Green, Utah, Florida, and Ohio State. However, while some coaches would be tempted to win 200 games, Meyer doesn’t appear to be.
Regardless of which jobs that are open, Meyer appears to be happy on FOX’s Big Noon, and not even $15 million a year could change his mind.
