49ers Get 4-Word Update on Christian McCaffrey Ahead of Week 1

The San Francisco 49ers are hoping that the 2025 campaign can be a bounce-back season for them, but ahead of their Week 1 contest against the Seattle Seahawks, the team and its fans were experiencing a sense of deja vu regarding star running back Christian McCaffrey.

On Thursday, McCaffrey popped up on the injury report with a calf injury before missing practice entirely on Friday. Similar to last season, when McCaffrey was abruptly ruled out for Week 1 right before kickoff, fans feared something similar was going to happen this year. However, it seems like McCaffrey is trending in the right direction based on his latest injury update.

Christian McCaffrey Receives Positive Injury Update

In his first full season with the 49ers, McCaffrey put together a historic season, racking up 1,459 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground, and 67 receptions, 564 yards, and another seven scores as a receiver. In 2024, though, McCaffrey never managed to get off the ground, as he played in just four games due to a slew of injuries.

As the Niners and their fans likely remember quite well, McCaffrey was dealing with an Achilles and calf injury during the summer that the team insisted would not impact his availability for the start of the regular season. Sure enough, McCaffrey missed San Francisco’s Week 1 contest, and he didn’t end up making his return to action until Week 10. In Week 13, he ended up suffering a PCL injury that would end his season.

With McCaffrey missing practice on Friday, it seemed like he was trending towards missing Week 1 for the second straight year with a mysterious injury. However, San Fran once again remained cautiously optimistic about his injury status, and according to NFL insider Adam Schefter, McCaffrey is on track to suit up against the Seahawks.

“49ers RB Christian McCaffrey, who was added to the injury report Thursday with a calf issue, will play today vs. the Seahawks. ‘He’s good to go,’ said one source,” Schefter shared in a post on X.

49ers Counting on Christian McCaffrey to Deliver Right Away vs. the Seahawks

Injuries have already caused the 49ers some issues in 2025, and they haven’t even taken the field for Week 1 yet. Losing McCaffrey, even if just for one game, would have made life even more difficult on offense for the 49ers. However, he appears set to lead the charge at running back, with Brian Robinson Jr. and Isaac Guerendo also set to factor into the mix and give McCaffrey breaks throughout the game.

Again, we’ve seen things go sideways from seemingly out of nowhere with McCaffrey’s injury status, so it’s going to be worth checking in on his status once the 49ers announce their inactives for the game later in the afternoon. With a 4:05 p.m. ET kickoff, McCaffrey has a little bit of extra time to get himself ready for this game, but it seems like he’s already ready to go and help San Francisco attempt to pick up a season-opening victory over Seattle.
