The San Francisco 49ers have enjoyed a remarkable start to the 2025 campaign, posting a 4-1 record through five games despite being battered by injuries. Once again, injuries are a top storyline ahead of their Week 6 contest against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the team received a pair of big updates early on Sunday morning.
On offense, the Niners have seemingly had a revolving door of players suiting up for them due to the injury bug. However, they could have a pair of key players at their disposal against the Buccaneers, as a pair of encouraging reports on quarterback Mac Jones and wide receiver Jauan Jennings emerged before kickoff.
Mac Jones, Jauan Jennings Both Expected to Play for 49ers in Week 6
Many folks wouldn’t have exactly faulted San Fran for succumbing to their injuries early in the season, but they have managed to overcome it all and continue to win at a very high rate. In Week 5, they took down the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday Night Football despite being without virtually half of their starting offense.
Again, injuries will play a role in determining who is on the field for the Niners in Week 6. While Jones led San Fran to victory against the Rams, he picked up a slew of injuries along the way. He also did so without having his top wide receiver, Jennings, at his disposal, as he has been dealing with ankle and rib injuries as of late.
With Purdy out again in Week 6, San Fran will be turning to Jones, even though he isn’t 100% healthy either. And while several other playmakers, such as Ricky Pearsall, aren’t healthy enough to play, Jennings has finally gotten himself healthy, as he’s expected to be back in action alongside Jones on Sunday.
“49ers WR Jauan Jennings, listed as questionable for Sunday due to an ankle and rib injury, is expected to play vs. the Buccaneers, per sources,” Adam Schefter of ESPN reported in a post on X. “49ers WR Ricky Pearsall also has a chance to return next week from his knee injury.”
“49ers QB Mac Jones, listed as questionable for Sunday due to an oblique injury, is expected to play vs. the Buccaneers, per sources. There is ‘a chance’ that San Francisco’s regular starting QB, Brock Purdy can return for next week’s game vs. the Falcons.”
49ers Looking to Earn Another Improbable Win vs. Buccaneers

Having both Jones and Jennings on the field would have to be viewed as a major win for the 49ers, even if it may ultimately not be enough to help them take down the Bucs. And while it’s tough to look too far ahead right now, it appears as if more reinforcements could be on the way in the form of Purdy and Pearsall next week.
San Francisco has taken down several tough teams so far this year, but Tampa Bay may just be its biggest challenge yet. While the Bucs are also beat up with injuries, they have four wins through five games as well. One team will earn its fifth win, while one will suffer what will likely be a hard-fought loss. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:25 p.m. ET, and it appears both Jones and Jennings will be on the field looking to help guide the Niners to victory.
