Former San Francisco 49ers kicker Jake Moody was the hero for the Chicago Bears in their Week 6 win over the Washington Commanders.
Moody had only been part of the Chicago Bears‘ active roster for about seven hours when he drilled a 38-yard field goal as time expired, lifting the team to a 25-24 win over the Washington Commanders on Monday night.
Nonetheless, Moody wasn’t expected to kick in that game. The team promoted him from the practice squad earlier that day after Cairo Santos couldn’t go due to his right thigh injury. Moody joined Chicago on Sept. 13 after his disappointing tenure in the Bay Area ended after missing two field goals in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks.
Amid this uplifting moment, David Lombardi of The San Francisco Standard shared his thoughts on Moody potentially having a redemption arc after it didn’t work out with the 49ers.
“Well, how can you not be romantic about football?” Lomardi said on his YouTube channel. “That’s a feel-good story for all sides. And I do not care for you if you’re somebody who’s going to try to talk down on Jake Moody. He’s a human being. He struggled with the 49ers; everybody understands that.
“He got a change of scenery, went to the Chicago Bears, and on a windy, wet night in Washington, D.C., Jake Moody kicked the winning field goal, had four makes, even overcame some adversity after the block, and won the game for Chicago on Monday Night Football.”
Former 49ers Kicker Jake Moody Has Overcome Adversity
Moreover, Moody made history in his team debut by becoming the first Bears kicker to nail a walk-off field goal as time expired in the fourth quarter. Additionally, Lombardi spotlighted the adversity the Michigan product has overcome, leading to that feel-good moment in Week 6.
“How could you not feel good just from the sense of humanity?” Lombardi added. “There are a lot of trolls online. There’s a lot of negativity online. I watch sports for the competitiveness; I watch sports for the people. I watch sports for the resilience, the stories. And Jake Moody winning that game for Chicago deserves a salute.
“I would venture to say that 99 percent of the people watching have not encountered the type of adversity in their professional lives that Jake Moody encountered with the 49ers. As an NFL kicker in that kind of pressure cooker, and then to come back from it, to keep on working, to go and kick a game-winner for the Chicago Bears — that was pretty cool. And you know what? Things work out for all sides.”
Jake Moody Talks About Bears Debut
Furthermore, after his winning kick sailed through the uprights at Northwest Stadium, the 25-year-old spoke with reporters about the performance.
“It’s a pretty cool series of events,” Moody said (h/t Courtney Cronin of ESPN). “A couple days ago, I didn’t know I was playing and to get lifted up by my teammates, it’s an amazing feeling. I’m really glad I got to share that moment with them.”
Still, whether it works out with the Bears or not, what’s most important is that Moody gets his confidence back and turns his situation around to become a reliable NFL kicker as he showed against the Commanders.
