The San Francisco 49ers will see Shedeur Sander this week when the Cleveland Browns’ rookie makes his second start.
Sanders was considered by many analysts to be a first-round pick. He ended up sliding to the fifth round, where the Browns selected him with pick No. 144. San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan admitted he didn’t do a lot of work on Sanders leading up to the draft, but was surprised by his slide.
“I didn’t put a lot of time into him personally. I knew our coaching staff thought he was a good player,” Shanahan said. “The tapes that they showed me, I thought he was a good player also. Yeah, it did surprise me just going a little bit later when he did just hear what everyone was estimated and stuff, but I’ve been in enough drafts to know that not much should surprise you.”
49ers Coach Kyle Shanahan Big Fan of Deion Sanders
Shanahan did admit that he’s a big fan of Shedeur’s father, Deion Sanders — a Hall of Famer, eight-time Pro Bowler and two-time Super Bowl champion. Deion is now the head coach at Colorado.
“He was probably my number one player just in terms of being a true fan,” Shanahan said. “I always talk about how I got his jersey in 1994 and wore it for about six months straight until someone jacked it from me. I’m still looking for that guy. But no, he was such a unique player. He was just different than everyone, his talent and everything.
“Now to watch him be a coach and to watch him raise, I think he’s got three boys, but to watch the two boys in sports have been really cool to watch. I know my wife and my daughter, they’re huge Colorado fans too. So, I get to hear about the Buffaloes all the time.”
Browns QB Shedeur Sanders is Unknown Challenge for 49ers
For the 49ers, they don’t have much to go off of in terms of film for Sanders. He’s played just six regular-season quarters for the Browns, which represents a challenge for defensive coordinator Robert Saleh.
“Shedeur, he came in over the last week-and-a-half, like his off-schedule stuff is going to be a problem, could already tell that,” Saleh said. “As he gets comfortable and what they’re asking him to do, he’s only going to get better because you could tell how important it is to him and how much work he’s going to put into it.
“They’ll evolve as an offense. I wish I could tell you exactly what it’s going to be. We have an idea of what it’s going to be on Sunday, but I’m sure they’re going to keep adding little wrinkles to help him grow as a football player and we’re just going to have to be great in those moments and play good, sound, fundamental football.”
The 49ers are a 4.5-point favorite as they head to Cleveland to face the Browns. San Francisco has won two in a row and enters the matchup at 8-4.
