Brock Purdy is being paid like one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks, but decision makers across the league don’t view him as such.
The San Francisco 49ers quarterback’s name did appear on ESPN’s highly anticipated coaches/scouts/executives list of quarterbacks, but in the “others receiving votes” category.
Purdy joined the likes of Kyler Murray, Tua Tagovailoa, Aaron Rodgers, Dak Prescott and Bo Nix on the second tier behind the top-10 list and two honorable-mention QBs.
Purdy, of course, signed a five-year, $265 million contract extension with the 49ers this off-season with $100 million in guaranteed money.
Why Was Brock Purdy Not On The Top-10 of Quarterbacks?
Unfortunately, list-compiler Jeremy Fowler did not go into great depth about the “others receiving votes” category. But Purdy was only an honorable-mention member on the list a year ago and clearly regressed in the Niners’ middling 6-11 season last year.
“It’s hard to call him top 10 based on the guys ahead of him, but it’s hard to keep him out of the top 10, too,” an NFC executive said to Fowler in 2024.
Despite his new contract, and the high praise from current and former teammates alike, Purdy had a career high 12 interceptions and only threw 20 TDs and 3,864 yards a season ago.
Yet, Purdy of course dealt with scuttlebutt surrounding his contract plus injuries to his top receivers, notably Brandon Aiyuk, who tore his MCL and ACL against the Chiefs a season ago.
With Aiyuk and 2024 breakout receiver Jauan Jennings (77 catches, 975 yards, six TDs) and second-year wideout Ricky Pearsall making an underrated receiving corps — plus No. 2 ranked tight end George Kittle still on the list — Purdy and the Niners offense are in line for a bounce-back season.
Who Was Ranked Ahead of Brock Purdy On The ESPN List?
To be fair, the list of QBs ranked ahead of Purdy is an elite class of names.
The top-4 remained the same, headlined by Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs again. Even though he claimed the MVP, Josh Allen trailed Mahomes by finishing in second place.
Joe Burrow, the Cincinnati Bengals quarterback who had an eye-popping 70.6 completion percentage and 43-9 touchdown-to-interception rate despite the fact the Bengals went 9-8 and missed the playoffs, followed Mahomes and Allen in third.
Two-time NFL MVP Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens was fourth. Purdy’s division rival Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams was ranked No. 6 — and the only QB older than 30 years of age on the list.
This was the first year since ESPN started compiling the list that Rodgers was not named in the top-10.
Here is the full list of the ESPN-compiled list of top-10 quarterbacks as judged by coaches, scouts and executives.
