49ers QB Mac Jones Receives Blunt Words From Nick Bosa

No Brock Purdy for the San Francisco 49ers? No problem as Mac Jones led the team to a 26-21 win over the New Orleans Saints on September 14 at the Caesars Superdome.

Jones went 26-for-39 on his passes while passing for 279 yards and recording three touchdowns. While under center, the former New England Patriots quarterback spread the ball around. Nonetheless, Jauan Jennings was the go-to target with five receptions for 89 receiving yards and one touchdown.

Overall, it was an impressive performance, and after the victory, Jones earned praise from his teammates, including Nick Bosa, for stepping up when the team needed him the most.

“He’s just fun energy to have a backup quarterback who has that much swagger, and the offense feeds off of it, and did a great job today,” Bosa told reporters after the victory (h/t KNBR).

Bosa was a teammate who was confident that Jones would hit the ground running and help the team start the season with two wins. Now, Jones will look to build off his performance if Purdy remains out after this week.

Trent Williams Offered Advice to 49ers QB Mac Jones

While speaking to the media after the win, Jones revealed that Trent Williams offered words of encouragement that allowed him to calm down any nerves and noise that he was dealing with during the game.

“It’s just not making it bigger than it is,” Jones told reporters (h/t KNBR). “Sometimes when you have them, you fight them, but you can’t really do that. You just gotta let them come and figure out how to work through it. A lot of it’s just breathing and slowing down your pulse. Obviously, worked on that this offseason and got to continue to grow in that area.

“But really, the guys around me, like Trent, came up to me. He’s like, You’re good, dude. Just go out there and hoop. I was like, I got you. I can go hoop. Then once he said that, I was like, All right, let’s play ball. That was cool. If Trent Williams can say that, then I can do it, so that kind of just got me calmed down a little bit.”

What’s Next for Mac Jones and the 49ers?

With Jones performing well and showing head coach Kyle Shanahan that he can lead the team to a victory, does that calm any anxiety that the 49ers might have in rushing Brock Purdy back? It could allow for San Francisco to take a more cautious approach and give Purdy another week off before considering a return.

Next on the schedule of the 49ers is the Arizona Cardinals, so it’s another tough NFC West division game. Nonetheless, the contest is at home, so Jones won’t have to deal with the noise from the opposing fans.

San Francisco will also have a chance to go 3-0 and have two wins over division opponents. Moreover, the 49ers must stay on this pace as the Los Angeles Rams are also off to an impressive start, and the Seattle Seahawks secured a win in Week 2.
