49ers Receive Brock Purdy Injury Take Before Facing Saints

The San Francisco 49ers are already facing injury concerns just one game into the 2025 NFL season. On September 9, the team placed tight end George Kittle on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.

Quarterback Brock Purdy is also banged up, as head coach Kyle Shanahan said Purdy is dealing with injuries to his left shoulder and toe, with the toe being the more concerning of the two, per ESPN.

Even while battling an injury, Purdy completed 26 of 35 passes for 277 yards, throwing two touchdowns and two interceptions, finishing with an 80.4 QBR against the Seattle Seahawks.

If the San Francisco signal-caller is questionable for the Week 2 game against the New Orleans Saints, 95.7 The Game’s Joe Spadoni believes that the 49ers should be cautious and keep the player out of the game.

“I don’t play Brock Purdy this week because I don’t want him to aggravate an injury and potentially miss more weeks after this,” Spadoni said on the September 9 edition of “The Morning Roast.” “We already saw the offensive line last week. I’m very nervous about it. I’m very concerned.

“If he has to run for his life with a hampered toe this week on the artificial turf, it hurts even more; he gets sacked more. I’m telling you, those touchdowns and those scrambles that he had are going to turn into losses.”

Can the 49ers’ offensive line protect Brock Purdy?

Spadoni continued with the 49ers’ offensive line and doesn’t believe that the unit can protect a Purdy that will have limited mobility. Furthermore, with San Francisco signing the 25-year-old to a lucrative contract extension, they also have to think long-term with injury decisions.

“I don’t love Brock Purdy behind this O-line, is what I’m saying, Spadoni added. “That’s what I’m getting at here. But is the offensive line going to get better at any point this season? I don’t know But you also got to protect that investment. There’s a double-edged sword there, right?”

As the week goes on, there will be more clarity regarding Purdy and whether the 49ers want to risk their star quarterback playing with any type of limited mobility.

Who Will Start If Brock Purdy Can’t?

If Purdy can’t go, former New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones, who signed with the team as a free agent in March, would take over as the starter. Jones has experience starting games in the NFL, so he would be an ideal quarterback to put in should Purdy not be able to go.

Furthermore, Shanahan said Jones had a strong training camp before a minor knee sprain kept him out for about a week at the end of the preseason.

“He’s gotten really used to what we do,” Shanahan said on September 8 (h/t ESPN). “He had a good week of practice last week picking up really right where he left off. If he has to go this week, he’ll lead the guys, the guys will believe in him, and I know he’ll do his job at a high level

“I think it has to do with really how Brock is probably over these next 24 hours [and] throughout the week. That’s stuff we’ll look into.”
