49ers Receive Honest Words on Brock Purdy, Mac Jones Issue

The San Francisco 49ers are still facing a quarterback quandary as Mac Jones continues to perform well while Brock Purdy works his way back from a lingering right big toe injury that has affected much of the 2025 NFL season.

With Purdy’s return reportedly approaching, speculation is mounting over which quarterback the 49ers will ultimately rely on. Despite a Week 10 defeat to the Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco are still in playoff contention with a 6-4 record.

As the national sports media offer their take on the situation, FOX Sports’ Colin Cowherd is one of the many voices that have emerged offering their opinion regarding the quarterback issue in the Bay Area.

“I’ve said this before: You don’t want to justify things in pro sports,” Cowherd said on the November 13 edition of “The Herd.” “You don’t want to justify draft picks or decisions, just focus on who’s hot and who’s healthy. For the Niners, the hot quarterback is Mac Jones. The healthy quarterback is Mac Jones. I would be in no rush to bring back Brock Purdy

“[Jones is] completing 70 percent of his throws, averaging 270 passing yards—second in the league without Ricky Pearsall or Brandon Aiyuk. He has three 300-yard games, bound for first in the league, and his passer rating is solid: 97.5. That’s good—a starter in the NFL, a B-plus quarterback.”

National NFL Media Backs 49ers QB Mac Jones

Cowherd isn’t alone in thinking that Jones should be under center for the 49ers, even with the contract commitment that San Francisco made to Purdy. Heading into Week 11, former 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman shared his thoughts on the quarterback controversy.

“I just don’t see how Kyle will be able to take Mac Jones off the field with how he’s playing, Sherman wrote on November 9. “I know Brock Purdy has to start if he’s healthy, but this is a hot-hand situation right now, and Mac is rolling. Not trying to spark controversy, but this is an obvious observation. Either way, Mac has made himself a lot of money and will be starting somewhere next season.”

49ers Aren’t Paying Attention to the Media

Despite the chatter from national NFL media about what the 49ers should do, general manager John Lynch made it clear how the team plans to handle the quarterback situation.

“We’ve been pretty consistent, this is Brock’s team, Lynch said on November 13 during a KNBR appearance. “When he’s healthy and able he’ll be back out there. I think he got off to a good start with that yesterday… We’ll have them both ready, if [Purdy] shows his health and his ability, then he’ll be out there.”

Moreover, Jones isn’t paying attention to the outside noise and focusing on the week-to-week grind of the NFL, which sees the Niners facing the Arizona Cardinals in Week 11.

“I’ve never tried to look ahead, Jones said after the Week 10 defeat (h/t ESPN). “It’s hard not to, but I never want to do that. I want to focus on each week and I know how challenging the NFL is just having played for a couple of years and feel like we have a young team that needs leadership right now and my goal is to lead them and get ready for Arizona.”
