The San Francisco 49ers season was rough for a lot of people, but it’s possible that no one had it rougher than kicker Jake Moody.
His 70.6% field goal percentage was fifth-worst in the entire NFL. He also dealt with a high ankle sprain throughout the season and had multiple games when he cost the 49ers 7 or more points.
Moody’s struggles are viewed with a very critical eye by 49ers fans and players because they spent valuable draft capital on him. The team selected him with the 99th overall pick in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Kickers are almost never selected that high.
To amp up the pressure, Moody stepped into a situation where he was replacing legendary kicker Robbie Gould, one of the 49ers best playoff performers.
Because he came at such a high price and replaced a legend, Moody needs to perform like a generational kicker to justify the 49ers faith in him. Instead, he’s been one of the worst kickers in football.
So when the 49ers brought in veteran kicker Greg Joseph to compete with Moody for the job this offseason, Niners fans were glad. Moody needs to get better or lose his job. 49ers fans are glad he’s being held accountable to do that.
It seems 49ers players are glad, too. Nick Bosa was asked about the kicking competition at the first day of training camp on July 23, 2025. He could have avoided the question. A defensive end doesn’t need to comment on special teams.
But instead, Bosa said he’s liked the kicking competition.
“I actually am paying attention to it, I can’t lie,” Bosa said. “It’s kind of exciting.”
It must be tough for Moody that his teammates are excited that someone is challenging him for his job.
How Are Moody, Joseph Performing At Training Camp?
Moody and Joseph split the reps 50/50 on the first day of training camp Wednesday July 23, 2025. They similarly split reps at OTAs.
On the first day of camp, they both made all 4 of their field goal attempts, with each of them also making one of over 50 yards.
They’re going to keep splitting the reps 50/5o. And it seems the superstars like Bosa and George Kittle will be playing close attention.
Jake Moody’s Drama With Deebo Samuel
Back in Week 10 of the 2024 season, former 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel got into a heated confrontation with Jake Moody on the sideline.
Samuel was yelling at Moody to “lock in” after he missed his third field goal of the day. Long snapper Taybor Pepper also ended up in the middle of the scrum.
Samuel and Pepper are both no longer 49ers, but the confrontation embodied 49ers fans’ frustration with Moody.
Bosa’s recent comments, though of a lot different tone than Samuels, seem like another indication that 49ers players are just as frustrated as 49ers fans with Moody’s performance.
It should be noted that no one seems to have issues with Moody as a person. And, there’s no one who wants to fix Moody’s issues more than Moody himself.
What do you think, 49ers fans? Are you rooting for Jake Moody to rise to the occasion and win the kicking competition? Or are you rooting for Greg Joseph because you’ve lost trust in Moody?
