49ers Trade Pitch Lands Ex-Ohio State Superstar for 1st-Round Pick

Chris Olave is clearly one of the top wide receivers in the NFL, but playing for a brutal New Orleans Saints team, he hasn’t necessarily been able to show just how good he can be. Unfortunately, Olave has dealt with some injuries, but when he’s on the field, it’s evident that he has the potential to be a star. His 2023 season proved that, posting 1,123 yards and five touchdowns.

As the trade deadline nears, there will be many questions for the Saints to answer, and the San Francisco 49ers will have to hope that one of those could be them moving on from Olave. FanSided’s Julian Fadullon proposed a trade idea for that to happen, and while his deal would see the 49ers move on from a 2026 first-round pick for the Ohio State product, it might be worth the risk.

“I will readily admit that this isn’t the trade that I was almost going to propose. But right now, Kansas City is the evil empire, Alvin Kamara clearly wants to be a Saint for life, and is the only real bright spot for New Orleans fans. I could not, in good conscience, suggest that he leave. However, I am still of the mind that New Orleans is nowhere near the place where they can match the timeline of Chris Olave as he enters into his prime.

“…Olave is a true number one receiver that is having his career ruined in New Orleans. And I would understand the notion of wanting to stick it out with him, but good lord do they not have their quarterback situation thought out, even if Spencer Rattler has them actually treading water as a mid-tier offensive team,” he wrote.

Could Saints Move On From Chris Olave?

The key for the San Francisco 49ers in this situation is what they have to look forward to with Olave if they were to trade for him. Olave has one year remaining, his fifth-year option, left on his deal. Given San Francisco’s reluctance to pay some of its top players over the past few years, this is a discussion that needs to be had.

Would the 49ers Have an Interest in Chris Olave?

Dan Graziano of ESPN writes that if the New Orleans Saints move on from Olave, multiple teams—including the San Francisco 49ers—would jump at the chance to trade for the star wide receiver.

“The Saints don’t look as if they’re going anywhere this season, and they have Rashid Shaheed on an expiring contract and Chris Olave with one year (his fifth-year option) left on his deal. Would their new coaching staff make either or both of those players available? Could Calvin Ridley, who has struggled along with the rest of the offense in Tennessee, use a change of scenery? I don’t think we can rule out teams such as Buffalo, Kansas City, Green Bay and/or San Francisco if the right impact receiver becomes available,” he wrote.

With some of the injuries the 49ers have already dealt with, mainly to George Kittle, they could use another pass catcher as soon as possible. However, a deal is likely to occur closer to the trade deadline.
