Former New York Jets linebacker C.J. Mosley is hanging up his cleats.
National college football reporter Matt Zenitz broke the news on social media for CBS Sports.
“Five-time All-Pro linebacker CJ Mosley is retiring, he tells @CBSSports,” Zenitz posted.
“The former Ravens and Jets captain posted over 1,000 tackles in 11 NFL seasons. At The University of Alabama, Mosley won the Butkus Award, SEC Defensive Player of the Year, and back-to-back national titles,” Zenitz added.

Mosley’s NFL Career Get Cut Short Due to Injury
On March 12, 2025, the Jets released Mosley.
The former Alabama product battled multiple injuries in what ended up being his final season in the NFL.
“Mosley missed three games with a badly bruised toe, returned for two games as a part-time player, and suffered a freakish neck injury in the Week 8 pregame warmups. It was noncontact; he simply turned his head during a drill and aggravated a previous injury. He didn’t play that day. As it turned out, his season was over with what he called a herniated disc in his neck,” ESPN’s Rich Cimini revealed back in March.
When Mosley was released, there was early speculation that he could follow one of his old coaches to a new destination. Robert Saleh, Mosley’s former head coach, landed in San Francisco with the 49ers as their new defensive coordinator. Jeff Ulbrich, Mosley’s former defensive coordinator and interim head coach, went back to Atlanta with the Falcons as the DC.
Both places could have used an infusion at the linebacker spot. However, it seems that the injuries Mosley sustained in 2024 prevented those opportunities from coming to fruition.
Mosley Should Be in Consideration for the Jets Ring of Honor
Things didn’t start great for Mosley and the Jets.
The green and white lured him over in free agency on a record-breaking $85 million deal. In his very first season of that new contract, Mosley got hurt in the season opener and ended up only appearing in parts of two games all year.
The following season, Mosley opted out due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic.
At that moment in time, Mosley appeared to be destined to join a long line of free agent busts in Jets franchise history. However, Mosley flipped the script, going on a historic run.
“Before playing in just four games last season, Mosley posted at least 152 tackles each of the previous three years with the Jets, tying him for the most consecutive seasons with at least 150 tackles in NFL history,” Zenitz of CBS Sports revealed.
Mosley was a leader on and off the field for the Jets. He came from a winning program in Baltimore, and fellow Jets teammates looked to him for guidance.
Even after he got cut a few months ago, Mosley remained in the area to help out his former teammates.
Quincy Williams and Jamien Sherwood shared some intimate details about their conversations. Head coach Aaron Glenn challenged the two linebackers to step up in the leadership department this offseason.
