A turbulent offseason just took another turn for the Philadelphia 76ers. On Monday, the team announced that All-Star forward Paul George underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee following an injury sustained during a recent workout.
According to Shams Charania, George has already begun rehab and will be re-evaluated ahead of training camp. The procedure was reportedly performed by the same surgeon who operated on Joel Embiid earlier this year, as noted by NBC Sports’ John Clark.
76ers Face Uncertainty With Star Forward
George’s first season in Philly was anything but smooth. He hyperextended the same knee in the preseason, battled groin and finger issues throughout the year, and ultimately shut things down in March after receiving injections in his left adductor and knee. He finished the year averaging 16.2 points per game—his lowest since returning from a devastating 2014 leg fracture.
The 35-year-old played just 41 games in his debut campaign with the Sixers and has now failed to reach 60 games in five of the past six seasons.
Injury Adds Pressure to 76ers’ Core
George’s latest setback casts more doubt on the Sixers’ big-picture plans. He’s entering the second year of a four-year, $212 million deal, joining a core that includes Tyrese Maxey and Embiid—who himself played fewer than 20 games last season. All three shared the court just 15 times in 2024–25, and Philadelphia limped to a 24–58 finish—their worst since 1994–95.
With training camp looming, the 76ers must now navigate yet another rehab timeline for a key piece of their future.
Clock Is Ticking in Philadelphia

The Sixers entered this offseason with urgency, aiming to rebound from a lost year and capitalize on Embiid’s remaining prime. But with George now rehabbing, Embiid coming off his own surgery, and Maxey still developing as a full-time leader, questions continue to swirl. Can this trio stay healthy long enough to compete in the East? Or will the next move involve adding more insurance via trade before October?
For now, Philadelphia’s stars are healing—and the rest of the league is watching.
