A Familiar Weapon Has Vanished From Jalen Hurts’ Season — for Now

At one point in his career considered a lethal dual-threat quarterback, Jalen Hurts is on pace to have his worst rushing season yet.

The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback has been more judicious as a runner this season and is on track for career lows in both rushing attempts and rushing yards since becoming the full-time starter in 2021.

The next game for the Eagles (10-5) features two of the NFL’s most prolific rushing QBs in Hurts and Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills (11-4).

Despite the down year, Hurts has picked it up lately, rushing 14 times for 79 yards over the past two games, and that uptick figures to continue as the stakes climb heading into the playoffs. The reigning Super Bowl champions have already clinched the NFC East title, but are still playing for seeding.

In their Week 12 matchup in 2023, Hurts and Allen each threw for multiple touchdowns and added multiple rushing scores, making it the first game in NFL history in which opposing players pulled off that combination, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Jalen Hurts Will Enter Top 10 QB Rushing Yards Likely

Hurts currently ranks 12th all-time in career rushing yards by a quarterback, with the only active players ahead of him being Aaron Rodgers, Allen, Russell Wilson and Lamar Jackson. Hurts is only 59 yards behind Rodgers, who it at 9th all-time.

Hurts also ranks third all-time in quarterback rushing touchdowns, trailing only Allen and Cam Newton. What makes those numbers especially impressive is that Hurts has reached them in significantly fewer games than his peers. Allen, for example, holds the all-time record with 77 rushing touchdowns in 126 games, while Hurts has piled up 63 in just 92 games.

And with the Eagles still able to deploy the controversial “tush push,” particularly near the goal line, Hurts’ climb up the record books may be far from over.

Jalen Hurts and Josh Allen Making NFL History

At their current paces, Allen and Hurts both have a legitimate shot at breaking Emmitt Smith’s career rushing touchdown record of 164, with projections showing each could eclipse the mark early in the 2034 season.

To put that possibility in context, the top 20 players in career rushing touchdowns are all running backs, a group that includes LaDainian Tomlinson, Walter Payton, Barry Sanders and Jim Brown. Derrick Henry, who ranks fifth with 116 rushing touchdowns, is the only active player on the list.

Time is one thing working in Hurts’ and Allen’s favor, as it’s no longer unusual for elite quarterbacks to extend their careers well into double-digit seasons. Still, plenty of obstacles remain, including the league’s annual efforts to rein in the tush push.

Regardless, two of the greatest dual-threat quarterbacks the game has seen will share the field this weekend — and everyone involved, from tight ends to backs to receivers, knows exactly what that means.
