A.J. Brown Has Short Response to Only One Target in Eagles’ Week 1 Win

The Philadelphia Eagles got an important opening win against the Dallas Cowboys in a strange game. The Eagles didn’t play as well as they were likely hoping for, but a 1-0 start in the NFL is never anything to be upset about. Ultimately, the Eagles went in looking to win a football game and walked out with a 24-20 win.

There will be plenty they have to work on, mainly getting A.J. Brown the football, however.

Brown was targeted just one time during the Eagles game, something that has to be fixed if they want to be the team they’re looking to be once again this year. He had one catch, posting eight yards with that one catch. After the game, however, Brown didn’t seem too upset about what happened during the opening week.

“You know, that’s not something I can control,” Brown said, per FOX. “What I can control is my effort for when the ball does come my way.”

“They shaded to my side a lot of times … but nothing I haven’t seen,” Brown said.

Eagles Have to Spread the Ball Around

The Philadelphia Eagles are the perfect example of everybody gets to eat.

Whether it be Saquon Barkley, Jalen Hurts making plays on the run or with his arm, Jahan Dotson having three catches for 59 yards, Dallas Goedert being the guy he always is, and other factors, there will be weeks when Brown isn’t going to get the football as much as he wants.

According to head coach Nick Sirianni, Brown is going to have to be more involved in the offense, but he understands that games like this happen, and he’s just focused on figuring things out for the entire season.

“When we talk about roles, I tell those guys: ‘There are going to be games like this. This is gonna happen,’” Sirianni said. “To be what we want to be, obviously A.J.’s going to have to be involved more in the offense. But some games go this way. And I get that will be a story. But there are games that go this way.”

A.J. Brown Will Have to Be Patient

It’s also fair to note that at times, as Sirianni touched on, the Philadelphia Eagles won’t have much of an opportunity to get Brown involved.

There’s a reason why many consider him one of the top wide receivers in the NFL, which means defensive coverages will be all over him. Sirianni added that the Dallas Cowboys did a good job of taking him away, but still, that’s something the team will have to work through.

“[The Cowboys] did a good job of matching some of our routes,” head coach Nick Sirianni said after the game. “They did a good job of matching some things and taking away A.J. We had some different things to him that Jalen had to get through some progressions, and I think Jalen did a really nice job getting through his progressions tonight and then made some plays with his legs as well.”

Whether it be a double team, playing defensive schemes to ensure that Brown doesn’t get the football, or other avenues, Hurts will have to eventually get him the ball at least seven to eight times a game.
