Aaron Glenn Makes Feelings Clear on Benching Jets’ Justin Fields

New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn had a back-and-forth with a reporter on Monday, September 22, about his quarterback situation.

Media: “When Justin Fields gets clearance by the doctors to play, will he go back to being your starter?”

AG: “Well, we will talk about that today as a staff. We will make sure that we come up with the right answer for that. So I know what you’re trying to ask, alright, but we will make sure that we talk about that as a staff first and foremost.”

Media: “Just to be clear, because sometimes we speculate in the media a little bit.”

AG: “Yeah, I know that.”

Media: “So I’m trying to avoid that here. So you’re saying that it’s up in the air who will sta…”

AG cuts off the question: “Justin came in as our starter & he has been our starter. Listen, Tyrod [Taylor] was a backup. So I want to make sure that I know exactly where Justin is at. I don’t want to say anything until I know Justin is cleared.”

Fields Will Remain the QB1 for the Jets

ESPN’s Rich Cimini reacted to Glenn’s comments at the presser, saying, “Glenn makes it clear that Fields’ status hasn’t changed.”

Shortly after the Jets signed Fields to a two-year $40 million contract, the brass anointed him as the clear-cut QB1.

The former Ohio State product has been hurt twice since inking that deal. He dislocated his toe during training camp, which caused a scare when he was “carted” off the practice field. Then, fast forward to the regular season, Fields suffered a concussion against the Buffalo Bills in Week 2.

Fields missed the Week 3 road trip against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Tyrod Taylor Didn’t Do Anything to Change That Conversation for the Jets

One of the big questions after the Jets ruled out Fields last week is what happens if Tyrod Taylor plays well and the team wins.

Would the Jets keep him in the starting lineup and keep Fields on the bench? Well, that question should be moot because Taylor didn’t play particularly well, and the team lost.

He turned over the ball twice, which resulted in 10 points for the Bucs in what ended up being a two-point loss, 29-27.

If Taylor had played exceptionally well and the team won, perhaps a different conversation would have taken place this week.

Jets Have One Question to Answer Throughout the Rest of the 2025 Season

Taylor is 36 years of age. He is far closer to the end of his football journey than the beginning. He isn’t the long-term answer at QB for the Jets.

Is Fields? Who knows.

But before the 2025 season reaches its conclusion, the Jets need to figure out the answer to that question so they can have clarity heading into the offseason next year.

That means the Jets need to get Fields back out there as quickly as possible and use this season to evaluate him. Coach Glenn didn’t have an update to provide on Fields as he progresses through the NFL’s concussion protocol when he spoke to the media on Monday, September 22.
