Aaron Glenn Roasts Ex-Jets HC Robert Saleh, Players Pile On

That is a dish best served cold.

On Saturday, July 26, NFL Insider Connor Hughes asked New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn about pass rusher Will McDonald.

McDonald has always had speed to his game, but Hughes asked if the power we saw during training camp “is a new element to his game?”

Glenn responded, “Coaching. Coaching. It’s coaching.”

Hughes asked a follow-up, “How so?”

“Because he can do it. You just said he has never done it last year, right?” Glenn asked Hughes.

Hughes responded, “Not much.”

“Now you see him do it. It’s just coaching. That’s all it is,” Glenn answered.

Did Glenn Go After Saleh at the Podium?

Media analysts and fans on social media took that as a direct shot at former Jets head coach Robert Saleh, who led the operation from 2021 through 2024.

“Robert Saleh has been catching more strays than Mayor Humdinger,” NFL writer Keith Ensminger said on X previously Twitter.

“Saleh getting bodied right here lol,” a fan reacted.

“It’s a big [expletive] you to Saleh lol,” a fan surmised.

Several Jets Players Trashed the Previous Regime

Glenn hasn’t been the only one taking shots at the old coaching staff. Several of the current Jets players on the roster have been brutally honest about the changes that have taken place over the last couple of months.

Breece Hall says, ‘it feels a lot better’ going to work every day, compared to last year. He says there was ‘a lot of instability around the whole operation’ last year. Adds that players have bought into the new coaching staff,” ESPN’s Rich Cimini posted on social media.

Backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor, who joined the Jets last offseason, also chimed in.

“When you’re shifting culture, there are certain qualities that you have to have in a HC, & I think Aaron Glenn has them all. He gets the respect from everyone in the locker room just by the way he presents himself. His message to the team has been consistent since day one. He’s a straight shooter, & he gets it from a player’s side. He knows how to take care of us, & he also requires us to work as well. The conversation is always transparent, & as a player you can respect that, you know what you’re getting when you walk in the building, & it doesn’t just stop there, it bleeds through the rest of the coaching staff, & it’s one message versus hearing multiple,” Taylor explained via Jets influencer Harrison Glaser.

Jets offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker called out the lack of accountability over the last few years and how that has changed this offseason.

“Backing on what Sauce and Garrett said, I can see this thing turning around for sure, especially with Glenn being the type of coach he is, he praises physicality but even more accountability, that’s very important for a head coach to do. I haven’t seen that a lot [in] my first few years,” Vera-Tucker bluntly said via Nick Faria of Jets X-Factor.

The Real Proof Will Be in the Pudding

There were two problem areas, among others, last season for the Jets.

They struggled with tackling, and they were undisciplined.

On Monday, July 28, the pads come on for the first time for the Jets. In preparation for that, Glenn put his team through the paces in a tackling drill in shells on Saturday.

“It’s something I believe in, and really it’s just a precursor of what’s going to happen when we get to tackling, because we are going to tackle. The guys are ready for it. They were energized, they know what is coming, and it’s fun, but you also get a chance to teach,” Glenn explained.

Jets Attempting to Fix Penalty Issue

The Jets brought back the officiating crew for every practice at training camp in 2025.

Last offseason, the Jets decided against having refs at camp.

“It’s no secret that we were the most penalized team in the league last year,” Glenn said via ESPN’s Rich Cimini. “I will tell you this: We are going to knock these penalties out. We’re going to understand that undisciplined teams do not win games.”

Another shot at the previous regime?

In 2024, the Jets were No. 1 with the most penalty yards, Cimini said. Across three years from 2021 to 2024, the Jets “recorded the third-most penalty yards,” Cimini added.
