Undrafted free agent Brady Cook will make his third straight start for the New York Jets.
Before Cook takes the field against the New England Patriots, head coach Aaron Glenn shared some advice to his young quarterback.
“Stay confident in himself, knowing what he can do and just continue to build with these receivers, this O-Line, these running backs. Just these last two games, man, how can we try to continue to gel as an offense to improve each week?” Coach Glenn said.
When asked for his expectations for Cook, Coach Glenn responded, “To improve. That’s it. To improve. Go out there and have command of the offense.”
Diametrically Opposed Things Are Set to Collide at MetLife Stadium
The Patriots are headed to the playoffs. The Jets are headed to Cancun. Both AFC East teams will run into each other in MetLife Stadium in Week 17 for let’s call it a layover before they arrive at their final destinations.
New England has a path to winning the AFC East if it beats the Jets and the Buffalo Bills lose to the Philadelphia Eagles.
The only impact the Jets’ final result from this game will have is on their standing in the 2026 NFL draft.
While all of that is true, for Cook, this game means everything. Tomorrow isn’t promised for the rookie. Right now in this multiverse, he is the QB1 of the 3-12 Jets. That may not be the case in Week 18; heck, Cook might not even be here in 2026.
This Jets-Pats rematch serves as an audition for the Jets and the other 31 NFL teams in the league that Cook can play at this level.
Cook Has Posted Some Very Inconsistent Tape Thus Far
“Despite profound struggles, undrafted rookie QB Brady Cook will remain the starter. In 11 quarters of playing time, he has six interceptions, three fumbles (one lost), 17 sacks, and only two touchdown drives. Coach Aaron Glenn has acknowledged that Cook holds on to the ball too long but added, ‘All of our hands are bloody.’ By that, he means everyone — players and coaches — has to do a better job of helping Cook, whose inexperience is glaring,” ESPN’s Rich Cimini shared.
Coach Glenn initially revealed that he kept Cook as the QB1 because he provided the team with the best chance to win. However, in recent press conferences, he hasn’t necessarily been beating that drum.
Instead, opt for evaluation and seeing Cook in football situations to see how he responds to it.
The message is simple without saying it. Gang Green’s top priority isn’t winning football games, and there is a strong argument to be made for that being the right decision upfront.
Random wins at the end of one season with a collection of players doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with the next year’s team, who have mostly completely different players. Momentum is a thing in the middle of a season, but not from one year to the next.
Is Cook worth continuing to develop? The Jets are hoping to answer that question by season’s end.
