Abdul Carter Hype Continues to Grow Ahead of Giants Training Camp

The New York Giants are currently in summer break, but the Abdul Carter hype train has not stopped, and it feels like it’s only picking up steam heading toward training camp.

The Athletic’s Charlotte Carroll was the latest to rave about Carter after watching the rookie first-rounder throughout OTAs and minicamp, naming him as an early standout on June 26.

“It’s worth repeating here that it’s truly tough to evaluate players in the trenches in the spring,” Carroll began, before quickly shifting gears.

“With that caveat out of the way, wow. It’s easy to see why he was the No. 3 pick in this year’s draft,” the NYG beat reporter continued, going into more detail about what she observed.

“Throughout the spring, Carter has played with the starting unit, rotating with other top edges, Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux. It’s given us a glimpse into the potential lineup possibilities, which includes seeing Carter line up at inside linebacker. But no matter where he lines up, the constant has been the chaos he creates in the offensive backfield,” Carroll relayed.

Explaining: “He’s seemed to live there during some practices, and that’s been exciting to see for a team that needs the defense to take a big step forward this year.”

Carroll concluded by quoting Giants outside linebackers coach Charlie Bullen, who labeled Carter’s raw traits “pretty much as advertised.”

It’s Becoming Trendy for Giants Beat Reporters — & Coaches — to Rave About Abdul Carter

There were a few constants for the Giants this spring. Russell Wilson performed better than expected and appears to have the QB1 role locked down, wide receiver Jalin Hyatt had his best OTAs and minicamp since being drafted, and Carter is the real deal.

That last one has probably been the most obvious takeaway so far, and it’s becoming trendy for NYG beat reporters to gush over the new defensive playmaker.

NorthJersey.com insider Art Stapleton beat Carroll to the punch on June 20, naming Carter as his top standout on the defensive side.

“I have a secret to share … you ready for this observation?” Stapleton wrote, for dramatic effect. “Abdul Carter might be better than any of us thought. It’s scary to admit for a team that has embodied Murphy’s Law for a decade, but after watching this spring, I think the Giants and their fans should lean into it. He’s different.”

After quoting defensive line coach Andre Patterson, who noted that Carter was “born with” a special pass-rushing gene that most players take years to master, he added the following:

“That ability to finish is special, and Carter has it. Patterson went back to his days as an assistant coach in Denver to come up with the only other player he has coached in 24 seasons who had it this early: Elvis Dumervil, a two-time All-Pro for the [Denver] Broncos and the [Baltimore] Ravens.”

There’s No Hiding That Abdul Carter Is an Elite Talent, & Giants Training Camp Can’t Come Fast Enough

Generally, when an NFL coaching staff is fawning over a rookie this early in the process, it’s a pretty clear sign that they are special.

Carter checks every box. And there’s pretty much no hiding just how talented he is at this stage.

For the Giants fans who have yet to see Carter for themselves, training camp and the preseason can’t come fast enough.

With every flattering article written and every complimentary quote, the Carter hype grows. And perhaps, the rookie’s impact can alter the trajectory of this daunting 2025 season.
