Ruben Amorim has been warned he ‘cannot play’ Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir after the international break.

Amorim surprisingly picked Bayindir as his No. 1 for the start of the new season ahead of Andre Onana.

But Bayindir made an error in the Premier League opener against Arsenal and has generally looked shaky in goal.

Onana was offered a chance to impress in the Carabao Cup but also made a blunder and then looked all at sea in the penalty shootout as Grimsby Town sealed a famous win.

Bayindir and Onana’s struggles led Manchester United to sign Senne Lammens on transfer deadline day but it remains to be seen whether the young Belgian will come straight into the side.

After speaking to contacts at Old Trafford, Gary Neville suspected Lammens would initially be a back-up goalkeeper but Bayindir and Onana’s struggles may have changed things.

Manchester United appear ready to send Onana on loan to Turkish club Trabzonspor, leaving Bayindir and Lammens as Amorim’s two realistic options for the season.

But ex-Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley says Amorim ‘cannot’ select Bayindir going forward due to his struggles dealing with set-pieces.

‘Altay Bayindir, they can’t play him,’ Burley, who won the FA Cup with Chelsea and also earned 46 caps for Scotland, said on ESPN.

‘He might be okay at shot-stopping which is what goalkeepers are paid for but he’s absolutely useless at dealing with balls in from set-pieces.

‘This new lad [Lammens] needs to be able to marshal a back four, make saves and have an authority and make a statement at set-pieces.

‘That’s what every team is going to do against United now, they’re going to launch balls into the box and the goalkeeper needs to be able to deal with it.

‘He’s either going to sink or swim. We don’t really know how he’s going to handle this scenario.’

Discussing Onana’s poor form at Old Trafford amid speculation he could move to Turkey, Burley added: ‘He’s another player who’s gone to Manchester United and got worse.

‘He cost a lot of money but he wasn’t able to marshal a back four. I thought Onana would be the real deal, it looked that way in Italy.

‘I thought he might have a Peter Schmeichel-esque aura about him and boss about players but it hasn’t happened.

‘If this new, youngish lad comes in and starts flapping about all over the place, it’s going to be a mess.’

Manchester United were said to be open to offers for both Bayindir and Onana after signing Lammens from Royal Antwerp.

But it is Onana who looks set to leave the club, although his stance on a loan move to Trabzonspor remains unclear.

After completing an £18m deal for Lammens on deadline day, Manchester United’s director of football Jason Wilcox said: ‘Senne is an excellent young goalkeeper with great potential.

‘We are delighted that he has chosen to join Manchester United after significant interest from a number of clubs.’

Lammens, meanwhile, added: ‘I am extremely proud to be joining Manchester United. It is a real dream come true.

‘The past few years have been an amazing journey, it’s now ended in an incredible destination and hopefully the beginning of something special.’
