Adam Schefter Drops Cryptic Update on Sean McDermott’s Bills Future

The Buffalo Bills finished the 2025 season with a 12-5 record, the No. 5-ranked offense and the No. 10-ranked defense in the NFL.

And yet, some are wondering if head coach Sean McDermott could be on the hot seat.

McDermott is considered by many to be one of the top 10 head coaches in the NFL — an assertion backed up by his resume.

In nine seasons, McDermott has a 98-50 record with eight playoff appearances, five division titles, and two AFC Championship Game appearances. His .660 win percentage is second-best among active head coaches behind only Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni (.702).

While it’s hard to imagine a world where McDermott could be fired, that’s exactly what ESPN’s Adam Schefter hinted could happen on “Sunday NFL Countdown.”

McDermott’s Job Could be on the Line

The Bills closed out the regular season with a dominant 35-8 win over the New York Jets — a game they played without reigning MVP quarterback Josh Allen, star running back James Cook, and a few other key starters.

Despite the win, Buffalo finished as the No. 6 seed in the AFC, setting up a wild-card matchup with the No. 3 seed Jacksonville Jaguars.

If Jacksonville wins that game, Schefter implied it could spell the end of McDermott’s tenure.

“This name keeps coming up in the event that Buffalo struggles and goes one-and-done in the playoffs,” Schefter reported. “He is an accomplished coach, he is somebody who is respected, they’ve had a great record, they could win the Super Bowl and make it all null in void.

“But the fact of the matter is people have brought up his name. What would happen with Sean McDermott? The feeling is he’s safe. He’s safe for now…but if Buffalo loses in the playoffs, that would be a situation to watch.”

If McDermott, who has seven straight double-digit win seasons, were cut loose, every team with a head coaching vacancy—and even teams who are on the fence about retaining their HCs—would be lining up to interview him.

Bills Say Goodbye to Highmark Stadium

While it remains to be seen if this is McDermott’s final year with the franchise, the same can’t be said for the place the team has called home since 1973 — Highmark Stadium.

Sunday’s win marked the final time the Bills will play their home games at the 71,000-plus seat stadium. Before the game, several players shared their thoughts on saying goodbye to such an important part of the franchise’s history.

“The sentimental value of that stadium, the nostalgia that I’ll be feeling, the amount of memories that I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life,” tight end Dawson Knox said, via the team’s official website. “I’m so thankful for that. Even though it’s just a location … it’s a place that I’ll be forever grateful for.”

Wide receiver Gabe Davis added: “The history of it all – to be a part of that definitely feels surreal. This is a game that we all dreamed about playing, and to be able to beat some of the record books and doing it in that stadium.”

“There’s so much football history that has happened at Highmark, and this stadium means a lot to a lot of people,” offensive lineman David Edwards stated. “To be a part of that’s really special, and I don’t take that for granted. Even though I’ve only been here three years, I really feel like I’m part of this community, part of this history and that means a lot to me and my family.”
