AEW Star’s “Very Legit” Injury Likely to Keep Them Off TV

Swerve Strickland is reportedly dealing with a torn meniscus. According to Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select, Strickland has been carrying the injury for multiple years, dating back to his time with the WWE.

“After last week, I started asking around about this mention of Swerve visiting the doctor, or the medical team and was told, ‘yeah, it’s very legit,’” Sapp said via a recent Fightful Select podcast. “And, not only is it legit, he’s been working with a tear in his meniscus since 2019 when he was at the (WWE) performance center…He was supposed to have time off after All In, but he worked for an extra month..There is a fear, almost an assumption, that he’s going to have knee surgery, whether it be imminent or down the road. He is written off of TV as of right now.”

Strickland joined AEW in 2022. Since then, he’s emerged as a genuine star on the roster. To think that all of his matches have occurred while carrying an injury is wild. He’s consistently one of the most exciting talents on the AEW roster and has produced some slobberknockers in recent years.

Unfortunately for AEW, Strickland may need to miss some time. That means his absence will likely coincide with Will Osreapy’s. Therefore, AEW will have a big gap toward the top of the card. Nevertheless, resolving Strickland’s injury issues is best for the company and Strickland himself.

Strickland Sees Four New Pillars in AEW

Throughout AEW’s young lifespan, the company has continually pointed toward four pillars within the roster. At first, those were Darby Allin, Jack Perry, MJF and Sammy Guevara.

Yet, during an August 22 interview with Yahoo Sports’ “Uncrowned,” Strickland noted how there’s a new quartet leading the locker room and spurring one another on.

“Ospreay, Hangman, myself (Swerve Strickland), MJF included,” Strickland said. “We are the definitions of this era and generation. We take pride in that work.”

AEW has a deep and talented roster. From veteran talent to up-and-coming younger wrestlers, the company has plenty of strength in depth. However, the quarter that Strickland named is undoubtedly the leading cast, both now and in the future.

Strickland Lost at AEW’s Forbidden Door

On Sunday, August 24, Strickland fell short in an AEW Unified title match against Kazuchika Okada.

And while the match well well-paced, highly charged and fun to consume, it was clear that Strickland’s absence was also being explained via subtext throughout the contest. Okada continually targeted Strickland’s knee, especially after he appeared to twist it following a springboard over the ropes.

Nevertheless, the title bout also opened the door to a potential rematch once Strickland has recovered from his potential surgery and is back in AEW’s weekly rotation. Until then, Tony Khan must find ways of plugging the gaps left behind by Strickland and Ospreay.

AEW has numerous stars on the shelf with injuries at present. Fortunately, there’s a host of other exciting talents waiting for a bigger opportunity. Who gets that push, and how it impacts Strickland on his return, will remain to be seen. Still, AEW fans will likely be excited to see how everything plays out.
