AFC Team Poaches Raiders QB Ahead of Chiefs Game: Report

Despite the Las Vegas Raiders‘ season going awry weeks ago, the Las Vegas Raiders decided against giving any quarterback besides Geno Smith a chance to play outside of one game when Kenny Pickett started. When the team was eliminated from the playoffs, it would’ve been logical to promote rookie quarterback Cam Miller to the active roster and give him a chance to play.

Since the Raiders didn’t want to give him a chance to play, he’s now going elsewhere. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Miami Dolphins have signed Miller off Las Vegas’ practice squad to their active roster.

Miller was a sixth-round pick of the Raiders in the 2025 NFL Draft out of North Dakota State. He didn’t make the active roster out of training camp, so he’s been on the practice squad all season.

With possible major coaching changes coming to Las Vegas, it’s not a surprise he’d rather go into the offseason with the Dolphins’ organization. The Raiders likely won’t be too upset about losing Miller. They are likely to end the year with the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, which they should use on a quarterback. The Dolphins’ quarterback room has a lot of question marks heading into the offseason, so there will be an opportunity for Miller to make a name for himself.

Smith Out for Week 18

Miller would’ve had a chance to be the Raiders’ emergency third quarterback against the Chiefs in Week 18 had he not signed with the Dolphins. Head coach Pete Carroll revealed that Smith won’t be able to play.

The quarterback is dealing with a sprained ankle, and there’s no reason to play him in a meaningless Week 18 game. It remains to be seen who will start. Pickett previously started when Smith was injured, but he didn’t play well.

Aidan O’Connell hasn’t had a chance to play all season, so the Raiders might want to get some tape on him before the year is over. It’s also possible that both quarterbacks see some playing time against Kansas City.

Carroll Laments 2025 Season

Nothing has gone right for the Raiders this season. Carroll has a long history of winning, but he’s having the worst season of his coaching career.

He was surprised by just how bad the Raiders have been. If he could go back in time, he’d approach the year very differently.

“Well, I would like to have been as competitive as we could have been,” Carroll told reporters on Wednesday. “You look back, maybe there were some chances that we could have hit on that we didn’t. I look back at a lot of things that I would adjust just because of where we came out of the offseason, we weren’t as far along as we needed to be. And so, even though we played well in the opener, and that was a very good game for us, we could have been better, just better equipped, I think, for the rigors of the next six or eight weeks. I think we should’ve prepared for that more.”
