Al-Nassr ‘want to make Van Dijk world’s highest-paid defender’ in transfer to pair him with ex-Premier League rival

AL-NASSR reportedly want to make Virgil van Dijk the “highest-paid defender in the world” as they plot a stunning swoop.

The Dutch defender will turn 33 next month and is entering the final year of his £220,000-a-week contract.

He has been at Anfield since 2018 and helped the Reds to win the lot with Jurgen Klopp at the helm.

However, it has been all change at Liverpool this summer with the German boss leaving and Arne Slot replacing him.

Van Dijk cast doubt on his future after news of Klopp’s departure earlier this year and now there is more speculation as he prepares to start Euro 2024 with Holland.

Marca have claimed that Al-Nassr, who have Cristiano Ronaldo up front, have already held talks over a sensational transfer move.

The Spanish publication alleges that their general director met with Van Dijk’s representative on Tuesday.

And he produced a contract offer that “would make the Dutchman the highest-paid defender in the world”.

They went to pair him up with Spanish international Aymeric Lapore at the back.

The 30-year-old regularly fought it out with Van Dijk and Liverpool for the Premier League title during his five years at Man City before he headed to Saudi last August.

Al-Nassr are desperate to overtake Al-Hilal as the dominant force in Saudi and are plotting some big additions this summer.

They already have the likes of ex-Arsenal goalie David Ospina, former Man Utd full-back Alex Telles and Van Dijk’s old Liverpool team-mate Sadio Mane in attack.

But even those talents, who are managed by Portuguese coach Luis Castro, could not stop the club from finishing second in the Saudi Pro League.

They trailed title winners Al-Hilal by a whopping 14 points and then lost to their rivals on penalties in the King Cup of Champions final.

Now they want Van Dijk to come in and help to bridge that gap as well as another “big” signing.

Former Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, 34, has been at Juventus for the past seven seasons.

But Szczesny’s contract has just a year left to run and he looks set to be sold as Juventus ring the changes.

And we reported this week how the Pole was set to join Al-Nassr in a £15m move.
